Israeli forces kill Palestinian man in Jenin refugee camp

Israeli forces have killed a Palestinian man inside the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank, according to the Israeli military and the Palestinian health ministry. The incident took place during an arrest procedure in the camp, which lies adjacent to the city of Jenin. The victim was identified by a hospital director as Nasser al-Saadi.

The Israeli military said its troops shot a man who had thrown stones at soldiers inside the camp. It said the soldiers had initiated a suspect arrest procedure and fired at what it described as a threat. The Ramallah-based health ministry said a citizen was killed by Israeli fire and that ambulance crews transported the body to Jenin Government Hospital.

Wissam Baker, director of Jenin Government Hospital, said al-Saadi arrived dead after being shot in the thigh. He said it appeared the man bled heavily after being injured before an ambulance was called. The Palestinian Red Crescent had earlier said Israeli forces handed over the body of a 30-year-old from inside the camp.

The reports did not give a separate account of the circumstances beyond the shooting and transfer of the body. The killing comes against the backdrop of a wider Israeli operation in and around the Jenin refugee camp that began in January 2025. Israeli forces have occupied and barred access to the camp since then, in an operation aimed at uprooting Palestinian militant groups from refugee camps in the northern West Bank.

According to UNRWA, the operation has displaced nearly 40,000 people from camps in the area. The latest death adds to a prolonged period of violence in the West Bank since the Gaza war began after Hamas's attack on 7 October 2023. That wider conflict has made the West Bank a persistent flashpoint, with repeated Israeli military raids, Palestinian attacks and rising civilian casualties.

A tally based on Palestinian Authority data says at least 1,073 Palestinians, including several armed fighters, have been killed by Israeli soldiers or settlers in the West Bank since October 2023. Official Israeli data says at least 46 Israelis, civilians and soldiers, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations over the same period. The Jenin camp has been one of the most closely watched areas because of its role in the Israeli campaign against armed groups.

What remains unclear is the full sequence of events that led to the shooting, including the exact timing of the arrest procedure and the circumstances of the stone-throwing allegation. It is also not clear whether any further investigation or official review will follow. The incident is likely to remain part of the broader dispute over Israeli military operations in the northern West Bank and their impact on residents of the refugee camps.
