Residents return to flood-damaged Nauiyu as relocation talks resume
Residents of Nauiyu / Daly River in Australia's Northern Territory have begun returning home after spending three months in evacuation centres following extensive flooding earlier this year. The remote community, about 220 kilometres south-west of Darwin, is still dealing with the aftermath of the disaster. Some homes have been cleaned and repaired, but others remain severely damaged, and cleanup work is continuing.

The flooding led to evacuations in February and again in March, according to the supplied material. The Daly River peaked at a record height of 16.26 metres in March, leaving visible damage across the town. Piles of dirt remain along roadsides, and parts of a barbed-wire fence around the public swimming pool are strewn on the ground.
The pool itself is dusty and littered with rubbish, underlining the scale of the disruption. Residents have described mixed emotions as they return. Wally Johnston, a long-time resident whose home was among the first to be cleaned, said he and his family were glad to be back in the community.
He said they were able to resume activities they had missed, including fishing and being outside. Ronald Cooper said he was also glad to be back, but added that the damage was significant and raised health and safety concerns, particularly for older people worried about soil contamination and melioidosis. The return comes as service providers in the flood-affected community are urging governments to do more to support remediation.

The situation has also revived discussion about a proposal to relocate the community to higher ground. That debate is significant because the town has now faced repeated flooding and prolonged displacement, leaving residents to weigh the costs of rebuilding in place against the possibility of moving. Nauiyu / Daly River is a remote community, and the distance from Darwin has added to the challenge of recovery.
The fact that residents spent months in evacuation centres suggests the disruption was not limited to immediate flood damage, but extended into housing, services and daily life. The continuing cleanup also indicates that the recovery phase is likely to be lengthy, even as people return to their homes. What remains unclear is how many residents are still away, how much of the town's infrastructure remains unusable, and whether any formal decision will be taken on relocation.
The supplied material does not say when remediation work will be completed or what level of government support may follow. For now, the focus is on the return of evacuees, the condition of damaged homes and public facilities, and whether the renewed relocation debate leads to concrete action.
