India blocks Telegram until June 22 over medical entrance exam fraud concerns
India has temporarily blocked access to Telegram until 22 June, saying the messaging app was being used to defraud candidates taking a national medical entrance examination. The move was announced by the Ministry of Education and applies for a defined period, according to the government statement. It marks a rare and sweeping intervention against a major messaging platform in one of the world's largest internet markets.

The restriction was issued under a provision of India's information technology law that allows the government to block access to online services in the interest of sovereignty and integrity. Officials said the action was taken in response to the organised use of the platform by cheating networks targeting candidates in the NEET 2026 re-examination scheduled for 21 June. Telegram did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the app was still working in India until at least 0630 GMT on Tuesday.
The decision comes after India cancelled a key undergraduate medical entrance exam last month when authorities found that questions had been leaked beforehand. That episode triggered protests by students in several parts of the country and renewed scrutiny of exam security. The government has since scheduled a fresh examination, and the latest restriction appears aimed at limiting the channels used by groups accused of facilitating fraud.
The case matters because NEET is a high-stakes gateway for entry into medical colleges, and any allegation of leakage or organised cheating can affect large numbers of candidates.
