Suspected militant killed in Manipur encounter amid intensified security operations

One person has been killed in an alleged encounter in Churachandpur district in India's Manipur state as security forces step up operations in areas affected by recent community violence. Police said the incident took place on 16 June between Molphei and Songkong villages, where a joint column of the Assam Rifles and the Army was operating against suspected militants. The case has triggered competing claims, with Kuki-Zo groups and a local BJP legislator alleging the dead man was a civilian and calling for an inquiry.

According to the Manipur police statement, one suspected militant was killed during the encounter and an AK-47 rifle, magazines, ammunition, explosives and other items were recovered from the site. An Assam Rifles official reiterated that the operation was being carried out in coordination with other security forces and said an investigation was under way. The police also said the state's director general of police was personally overseeing operations in areas where there has been a rise in killings and armed activity in recent weeks.

The dispute over the identity of the dead man has added to tensions in a state already facing renewed unrest. Kuki-Zo groups have identified him as Lenminsang Haokip and alleged that the killing was a fake encounter. Letzamang Haokip, a BJP MLA, has also demanded a judicial and independent inquiry, along with action against those found responsible.

The allegations and the official account remain sharply at odds, and no independent finding has yet been made public. The incident matters because it comes amid a wider security crackdown in parts of Manipur where violence between communities has intensified. Police said combined forces are carrying out cordon-and-search operations in fringe and vulnerable areas of Kangpokpi, Churachandpur and Thoubal districts.

Police later said they recovered 11 12-bore shotguns, 294 live rounds, 34 empty cases and six bulletproof vests from an area including Leilon Vaiphei, Leilon Khunou, L. Munlio and Konsakhul.

That area has been at the centre of tensions for about a month, including the abduction and killing of six Naga men and an alleged gunfight on Monday in which three Kuki-Zo men were injured. These developments point to a volatile security environment in which local grievances, armed activity and counter-insurgency operations are overlapping. What remains unclear is the exact sequence of events in the encounter, the identity and status of the deceased, and whether any independent inquiry will be launched.

It is also not clear how the latest operation will affect the already tense relations between Naga and Kuki-Zo communities in the affected districts.
