Israeli drone strike kills Al Jazeera cameraman in central Gaza
An Israeli drone strike on a house in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza killed Al Jazeera cameraman Ahmed Wishah, according to the broadcaster. A correspondent at the scene said the strike also wounded several people. The incident adds to the toll on media workers reporting from the Gaza Strip during the war that began on 7 October 2023.

Al Jazeera said Wishah was killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a house in the camp. An Israeli military spokesman confirmed the strike and alleged that Wishah was a Hamas operative, but did not provide evidence to support the claim. The military later said he was killed in a "precise strike" alongside two other Hamas militants and described him as a sniper operative.
The broadcaster said Wishah had worked as a cameraman for Al Jazeera in recent years. It also said his brother and fellow journalist Mohammed Wishah was killed in April while travelling in his vehicle, which the broadcaster said happened during Israeli shelling. The latest killing is likely to intensify scrutiny of the risks faced by journalists in Gaza, where reporting conditions have remained extremely dangerous throughout the conflict.
The strike matters because it sits at the intersection of the war, press freedom and competing claims over the status of those killed. Israel has repeatedly said it targets militants and accuses some people working in Gaza of involvement with armed groups. Media organisations and rights groups have argued that journalists must be protected under international humanitarian law, even in active conflict zones.

Bureij is one of several refugee camps in central Gaza that have been affected by repeated Israeli military operations since the war began. The area has seen heavy fighting and airstrikes as Israel says it is pursuing Hamas fighters and infrastructure. In that context, deaths involving journalists have become a recurring point of dispute between the Israeli military and media organisations covering the conflict.
What remains unclear is the evidence behind the military's allegation that Wishah was a Hamas operative and the full circumstances of the strike. It is also not clear how many of the wounded were civilians or whether they were connected to the targeted house. Further statements from the broadcaster, the military or other officials may clarify the number of casualties and the intended target.
