FAO says 41 countries and territories need external food assistance
The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations estimates that 41 countries and territories globally require external assistance for food, including 31 in Africa. The assessment was published by FAO's Global Information and Early Warning System on Food and Agriculture in a report released on 3 July 2026 in Rome.

FAO said conflict and insecurity remain the primary drivers of the most severe levels of acute food insecurity. It added that El Niño-related weather conditions, together with high input prices, are constraining agricultural production prospects in East and West Africa.
In North and Southern Africa, FAO said the main harvest is already complete and cereal outputs are forecast to be above five-year averages in 2026, with record harvests expected in some countries. The latest Crop Prospects and Food Situation report also says that among 39 Low-Income Food Deficit Countries, aggregate cereal output is forecast to rise by 1.4% in the 2026/2027 season to 129 million tonnes, while total cereal import requirements are expected to increase by 2.0% to nearly 48 million tonnes.
