Leaked photo of abused Palestinian detainee prompts inquiry and anguish in Gaza
A leaked photograph showing a Palestinian detainee blindfolded, stripped to his underwear and severely restrained has triggered anguish in Gaza and prompted an Israeli military inquiry. Two mothers in the enclave say they believe the man in the image is their missing son, deepening the uncertainty around his identity. The photo has also renewed scrutiny of how detainees are treated during the Gaza conflict.

The image was originally posted on Instagram by an account that later appeared to have been deleted, and it included the words "good morning" written in Hebrew. In the screenshot, the detainee's hands are bound behind his back, his right foot is tied to the bottom corner of a cot, and a wooden rod is strapped along the back of his body from his foot to his neck. The Israeli military has said the photo is genuine and that it has identified the incident, but it has not named the man or said where he is being held.
The military said an inquiry is under way and that those involved will be dealt with according to the findings. It also said the treatment shown in the image does not align with its values. The lack of official identification has left the families of missing Palestinians searching for answers, with the image becoming the first visual clue for relatives who have had no confirmed information about their loved ones.
One of the women, Rana Abu Nassar, said she recognised her son Osama immediately when she saw the picture two days earlier. She said she knew the details of his body, including swelling in one foot and scars on his leg, and believed the same marks were visible in the photograph. Her son was arrested in March in an area near the so-called Yellow Line, which marks Israeli control within Gaza.

His arrest drew international attention because he was detained with his one-year-old child, who was released the same day. Abu Nassar said her son has mental health issues and argued that a person in his condition would not have taken his child into that area. She also said the child later had marks on his legs, which the family described as cigarette burns, although the military rejected allegations that its forces abused the boy.
The case has become part of a wider debate over detention practices, the treatment of civilians and the handling of people taken during military operations in Gaza. What remains unclear is the detainee's identity, where he is being held and whether the man in the photograph is Osama or another missing Palestinian. The inquiry announced by the military may provide further detail, but no timeline has been given.
For the families involved, the immediate question is whether the image shows a relative alive, and if so, in what condition.
