Nigel Farage resigns as MP amid funding scrutiny, triggering Clacton by-election

Nigel Farage has said he will resign as a member of parliament, setting up a by-election in Clacton where he says he plans to stand again. The Reform UK leader made the announcement in a speech on Tuesday, framing the contest as a direct challenge to what he called the establishment. He said the people of Clacton should judge his actions.

The move follows renewed scrutiny over undeclared benefits and funding linked to George Cottrell, a convicted fraudster. Farage said he had "done nothing wrong" and denied breaking the law, while arguing that parliamentary standards were being used as a political tool. He also said he had not misused public money and insisted that making money was not a crime.

According to the reported allegations, Cottrell recruited and paid three staff to work on Farage's social media before the 2024 general election. The same reporting said Cottrell has continued to allow Farage to use a five-storey Georgian townhouse he rented near Buckingham Palace. Cottrell was jailed in the United States in 2017 for his role in a money-laundering conspiracy.

The resignation adds a new electoral test for Reform UK at a time when Farage has been central to the party's push into the political mainstream. He has built his profile around hardline anti-immigration messaging and a confrontational style that has often targeted established parties and institutions. By choosing to resign and seek re-election, he is turning a standards row into a public vote on his leadership and political brand.

The case also comes as the parliamentary standards commission is already investigating Farage over a separate issue involving a 5 million pound gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne. Farage had initially said the money would fund his private security. He later said the pressure on his family's privacy and safety had contributed to his decision to step down.

What remains unclear is how quickly the by-election will be called and how the standards investigations will develop. It is also not yet clear whether the scrutiny over funding and undeclared benefits will affect Farage's standing with voters in Clacton. The next key moment will be whether he can convert the resignation into a renewed mandate at the ballot box.
