Hospital workers wounded in Israeli drone attack on Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza

An Israeli drone attack has injured hospital staff and nearby civilians at Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya, in northern Gaza, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The strike took place on Friday despite a reported ceasefire and hit the hospital courtyard and surrounding area. Medical sources said at least six people were hurt in and around the facility.

The Palestinian news agency said three civilians were wounded in the courtyard and three maintenance workers were injured nearby. The ministry said the attack formed part of what it described as the systematic targeting of health facilities. It also said the hospital was in the so-called Green Zone, an area under Israeli control, when the drone strike occurred.

The ministry warned that repeated attacks on medical sites threaten the ability of health workers to provide both routine and life-saving care. The incident adds to pressure on Gaza's already weakened healthcare system, which the ministry said has been severely damaged by the conflict. It said many Palestinians still need treatment outside the Strip, but restrictions on movement have prevented most from leaving.

The ministry called on the United Nations and humanitarian organisations to publicly condemn attacks on healthcare infrastructure. It said such pressure was needed to stop further strikes on hospitals and medical workers. Kamal Adwan Hospital has been one of the medical facilities repeatedly drawn into the wider conflict in northern Gaza.

The latest strike comes as international attention has also focused on the hospital's director, Hussam Abu Safia, who has been detained by Israel for more than 18 months without charge or trial, according to the account provided by the Palestinian side. His lawyers say his life is at imminent risk, while Israel has said his detention is lawful and based on concrete intelligence. The dispute over his detention has become part of the broader argument over the treatment of healthcare workers in Gaza.

The attack also comes amid wider reports of Israeli strikes elsewhere in Gaza on the same day. Wafa reported that at least a dozen people were injured across the territory, including people wounded near the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza and others after drones targeted homes in Gaza City's Tuffah neighbourhood. Those reports suggest the hospital strike was part of a broader pattern of violence on Friday, rather than an isolated event.

The immediate effect was to deepen concern over the safety of medical sites and staff in an area already facing severe disruption. What remains unclear is whether there were any further injuries after the initial strike and whether the ceasefire referenced by the Palestinian Ministry of Health was formally in force at the time. It is also not clear what response, if any, will follow from international bodies or from the parties involved.
