Satellite images suggest Iran is rebuilding damaged Taleghan 2 nuclear site after US strikes

New satellite imagery suggests Iran has begun rebuilding the Taleghan 2 underground facility inside the Parchin Military Complex after it was damaged in US strikes earlier this year. The images, captured between June and early July 2026, show fresh construction activity at a site believed to be linked to nuclear weapons research. The development comes as talks between the United States and Iran remain stalled and a ceasefire has collapsed.

The imagery was analysed in collaboration with the Institute for Science and International Security, which said the pictures indicate Iran has moved beyond initial damage assessment and debris removal. By 12 June, the three bomb impact holes above the underground facility had reportedly been temporarily covered. A well-used path to the southern entrance also suggested access had been restored through the only entrance still usable after the strikes.

Further images showed more visible reconstruction work over the following days. By 18 June, several trucks and a large crane had arrived outside the facility, while crews were clearing debris from a nearby headquarters building destroyed in a second bombing raid carried out between 24 March and 1 April. Satellite imagery from 20 June also showed rubble had been cleared from areas around the wider Taleghan 2 complex.

Newer imagery dated 22 June and 7 July reportedly showed extensive engineering activity aimed at restoring the hardened underground site. The findings matter because Taleghan 2 is believed to house test chambers and equipment connected to nuclear weapons research. That makes any repair work at the site politically sensitive and potentially significant for regional security.

The report also raises questions about whether Tehran is complying with a memorandum of understanding it signed with Washington in late June, under which it reportedly agreed not to pursue military nuclear research. The reconstruction appears to be taking place against a backdrop of worsening tensions. The report says President Donald Trump ordered a fresh round of strikes on Iranian targets, and that he has described the ceasefire as effectively over.

The combination of renewed military action and apparent repair work at a sensitive underground facility suggests the diplomatic track is under severe strain. What remains unclear is the full extent of the damage to Taleghan 2 and how far the reconstruction has progressed. It is also not known whether the work is limited to repairs or whether it could support renewed activity at the site.

The next developments to watch are any official response from Tehran or Washington, and whether further imagery shows additional construction or a change in the status of the facility.
