Russian anti-war politician Boris Nadezhdin detained near Moscow after announcing Duma run

Russian anti-war politician Boris Nadezhdin has been detained by police in a town west of Moscow, according to his social media account and his press secretary. The detention took place on Monday morning, weeks after he said he would stand as a candidate in September's State Duma elections. His press secretary said he was taken from his home, and the reason for the detention was not immediately known.

Nadezhdin was recently designated a "foreign agent" by the justice ministry, which accused him of spreading false information about the Russian government and calling people to take part in unauthorised rallies. That designation would have prevented him from taking part in the September elections. Nadezhdin responded that he would continue to live and fight, and said the move would not change his political biography.

He also said he would continue to run for the State Duma and collect signatures. The detention comes after Nadezhdin emerged as one of the few public figures to challenge Vladimir Putin directly in the 2024 presidential race. He tried to run on an anti-war platform and called for an end to the hostilities in Ukraine.

He was eventually blocked from standing by the Russian electoral commission after officials said more than 15% of the signatures submitted with his application were flawed. He contested that decision but was still unable to run, as were other credible opposition figures. His latest move back into electoral politics is significant because it comes ahead of another national vote in a political environment that has remained tightly controlled.

The State Duma is Russia's lower house of parliament, and the September election would be another test of how much space remains for opposition campaigning. The case also follows the use of the "foreign agent" label against critics of the government, a designation that has been used to restrict public activity and political participation. Nadezhdin has previously said that if elected president his first task would be to stop the conflict with Ukraine and restore normal relations with the Western community.

He also said in early 2024 that he was supported by "dozens of millions of people" who did not want Russia to continue on a path of authoritarianism and militarism. Those comments, together with his anti-war stance, made him one of the more visible critics of the Kremlin during the last presidential campaign. What remains unclear is the legal basis for his detention and whether it is linked directly to his election plans or to the foreign agent designation.

It is also not known whether he will face formal charges or be released without further action. The case will be watched for signs of how authorities intend to handle opposition activity ahead of the September Duma vote and whether Nadezhdin will be able to continue his campaign.
