Iran says drone hit U.S.-used base in Kuwait as Kuwait confirms attacks and damage

Iranian state media has said a drone struck a military base used by the United States in Kuwait, while Kuwait separately confirmed that it came under Iranian attack on Tuesday. The Iranian account said a Shahed drone hit a drone platform at Ali Al-Salem Air Base, and video of an explosion was published by state-linked outlets. Kuwait said its forces intercepted missiles and drones during the attack, and that debris caused damage in several locations.

According to the Iranian military account, the target was a platform for drones at Ali Al-Salem, a base used by U.S. forces in Kuwait. The same reports said the strike was carried out by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which described the operation as part of continuing attacks on U.S. bases in the region. Kuwait did not identify all of the sites hit, but confirmed that a naval vessel was struck and that four military personnel were wounded.

The country also said it intercepted one ballistic missile, five cruise missiles and 33 drones. Kuwait said the damage included material losses and a fire that was brought under control without any deaths. The confirmation of injuries and damage gives the incident immediate significance beyond the competing claims over the U.S.-used base.

It also shows that the attack reached Kuwaiti territory even as air defences intercepted much of the incoming fire.
