Iran holds funeral procession for children killed in school missile strike as more remains are recovered

Iran organised a funeral procession on Wednesday for the remains of some of the children killed in a missile strike on a school in Minab, in the south of the country. State television said the procession was held for victims of the attack, which took place on the first day of the war. The event comes as Iranian media reported that more remains had recently been recovered from the rubble of the school.

According to state broadcaster IRINN, 68 sets of remains belonging to 34 children who had already been buried were recovered from the debris. Iranian media also published images they said showed the newly discovered bodies of the school victims. The attack on the school took place on 28 February, and a large funeral for the victims had already drawn thousands of people in Minab on 3 March.

The school strike has remained a politically sensitive issue because of the scale of the reported deaths and the continuing dispute over responsibility. Iranian authorities have said more than 175 children and teachers were killed in the attack. A US internal military investigation initially indicated that American forces were probably responsible, but the Pentagon later expanded the inquiry and has not confirmed any preliminary conclusion.

The case has also become part of a wider military and diplomatic dispute linked to the war between Iran and the United States and Israel. In June, the head of US Central Command said the investigation into the girls' school attack was complex because the school was located on an active Iranian cruise missile base, but that the inquiry was nearing completion. Last month, US President Donald Trump said nobody had intentionally attacked the school and that mistakes happen in war, while also saying he would accept the findings of the investigation.

The renewed funeral activity shows that the aftermath of the strike is still unfolding months later. It also underlines the continuing public grief in Iran and the unresolved questions around the attack. The recovery of additional remains suggests that identification and burial arrangements are still incomplete, even after earlier mass funerals.

It is also not known when the military inquiry will be completed or whether any new findings will be made public.
