Japan’s rescue operation continued after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Kyushu and Kumamoto, with the death toll rising to at least 13 and dozens reported trapped in a shopping mall rubble site. Across Europe, wildfires intensified in France and Spain as evacuations rose and officials warned a new heatwave would push temperatures into the high 30s and low 40s Celsius.
