Meloni hails final approval of law on recovery programmes for drug-related offenders

Giorgia Meloni, President of the Council of Ministers, said she was satisfied with the final approval of a law strengthening the possibility for people convicted of offences committed as a result of drug addiction to undergo a recovery programme under house arrest at a therapeutic community instead of remaining in prison. The measure applies when the sentence does not exceed eight years' imprisonment.

Meloni said the government draft law was further developed in the Senate with input from the opposition, including amendments proposed by opposition parties. She described the text as the result of a joint proposal from the entire addiction recovery field, beginning with therapeutic communities.

According to the statement, the proposal was endorsed and presented at the National Conference on Addiction held in Rome last November. Meloni called the law a victory for those who will use the opportunity, for public security, and for the prison population, which she said will be eased by people opting for therapeutic community programmes.

She said rehabilitation removes the trigger that pushes certain people to reoffend.
