U.S. directs Europe command to oversee Ukraine security assistance reorganization

European Command to oversee the reorganization of Security Assistance Group-Ukraine and the realignment of roles and responsibilities across SAG-U and NATO Security Assistance and Training-Ukraine. The announcement was issued from Stuttgart, Germany.

U.S. officials said the reorganization will not affect U.S. support for Ukraine. They said the changes are intended to increase the functional efficiency and effectiveness of security assistance to Ukraine, shift leadership for key elements of the mission to allies, and free U.S. resources for other U.S. global priorities.

Grynkewich, commander of USEUCOM, said allies have shown they can take the lead in support of Ukraine's defense. Army Europe and Africa spokesperson, said the reorganization of SAG-U does not diminish U.S. support or commitment to Ukraine and that support will continue through coordination with USEUCOM and NSATU in line with U.S. policy.

The statement said SAG-U was established on Nov. 4, 2022 after the Russian invasion of Ukraine to continue long-term security support.

It also said that over the last 3.5 years, SAG-U distributed over $2 billion in security assistance and engaged with Allied and partner nations to build and increase support for Ukraine, while also informing U.S., joint, and NATO lessons-learned efforts from battlefield observations.
