Poland detains Russian suspect over alleged assassination plot in Warsaw

Poland says it has arrested a Russian national accused of planning to kill a Ukrainian-American dual citizen in Warsaw. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the suspect was detained on 7 August and described the alleged plan as an attack linked to Russian secret services. He said authorities intervened at the last minute to stop what he called an execution-style plot.

Tusk said the man had been recruited by Russian intelligence and was allegedly tasked with killing a person he described as inconvenient to the Putin regime. He did not identify the intended target by name, but said the man held both Ukrainian and US passports. The prime minister also said this was the first time that someone acting on Russia's behalf had sought to attack an American citizen on NATO territory.

The case adds to long-running Polish concerns about sabotage, espionage and covert activity linked to Russia since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Poland, which borders Ukraine and serves as a major transit point for military and other aid, has repeatedly said its role makes it a target for hostile operations. Tusk said Warsaw would likely face similar pressure again, underlining the government's view that the threat is continuing.

The Russian embassy in Warsaw had not immediately commented on the allegation. What remains unclear is the identity of the intended target, the full role of the suspect, and whether any wider network was involved.
