Frankfurt Airport malaria outbreak kills two workers as officials investigate rare mosquito transmission
German health officials are investigating a malaria outbreak linked to work at Frankfurt Airport after two workers died and four others were treated in hospital and recovered. The airport, Germany's largest, has been placed under closer mosquito monitoring while traps have been installed on and around the site. Officials say the case is being treated as a rare instance of airport malaria, in which mosquitoes are transported by aircraft.

Since last month, six people have been infected with malaria tropica in connection with work at the airport, according to Frankfurt's public health department. One of the two people who died began showing symptoms at the start of July, while the other became ill in mid-August. The four other infected people are now out of danger, and letters have been sent to airport workers to raise awareness of symptoms and encourage vigilance.
Doctors have also been asked to watch for patients with unexplained fever who work in and around the airport. The health department said malaria can be overlooked because airport malaria is very rare, which can delay diagnosis and increase the risk of death. It also said human-to-human transmission is not possible, and that the public risk in Frankfurt remains low.
The investigation matters because Frankfurt is one of Europe's busiest aviation hubs and the outbreak raises questions about how disease-carrying mosquitoes can travel long distances in aircraft cabins or baggage holds. The Robert Koch Institute, Germany's national disease control body, believes the infection was transmitted by an Anopheles stephensi mosquito imported by plane. Fraport, which operates the airport, said mosquito traps had been set up in and around the site and that mosquitoes had been caught. Those samples are being examined in a tropical medicine laboratory in Antwerp, Belgium. Frankfurt's health department has also said higher temperatures in Germany may allow mosquitoes to survive for longer periods, although it stressed that the immediate risk to the wider population is low.
What remains unclear is exactly how the mosquito reached the airport environment and whether any further cases will emerge among workers or nearby residents.
