Three dead after flooding hits Navajo Nation in New Mexico
Three people have died after floodwaters swept them away near the community of Newcomb in northwestern New Mexico, according to Navajo Nation authorities. The incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday, after heavy rain left roadways blocked in parts of the area. Local officials said police responded to reports of people being carried off by floodwater at about 12:30am local time.

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said two adults and a child were killed in the flooding. He offered condolences to the family and urged residents to exercise caution in areas affected by rainfall. In a statement, he said there were no words that could ease the pain of losing loved ones so suddenly, and that the community's grief was being shared by the wider nation.
The National Weather Service office in Albuquerque had issued a special briefing on Tuesday warning of the possibility of widespread thunderstorms in the coming days. It repeated that warning on Wednesday, saying moisture levels were expected to reach record levels for mid-September. The office said a Flash Flood Watch was in effect for the western third of New Mexico and the South Central Mountains, and warned that flash flooding could occur anywhere in central and northern New Mexico.
The deaths highlight the continuing danger posed by fast-moving floodwater in the US Southwest, where dry terrain can quickly turn hazardous during intense rainfall. The Navajo Nation spans parts of New Mexico, Arizona and Utah, and communities in remote areas can face added risks when roads become blocked or emergency access is limited. The latest flooding also comes as heavy rainfall is forecast across parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah through Thursday.
