11 Syrian personnel killed in weapons depot blast near Deir ez-Zor

The Syrian Ministry of Defence said 11 of its personnel were killed in an explosion at a weapons depot at an army site near the town of Ayyash, west of Deir ez-Zor Governorate. The ministry said it has opened investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A funeral for those killed was held at Deir ez-Zor National Hospital on Saturday. Officials and military personnel attended the ceremony, according to the ministry's statement.

The ministry said the blast comes after a series of similar incidents of unknown origin involving ammunition depots and vehicles in Syria. It said one of the most significant recent cases was two explosions in the country's northwest earlier this month that killed 19 people.
