Council appoints new EPPO prosecutors for Germany and Slovenia

The Council has appointed two new prosecutors to the European Public Prosecutor's Office, naming Christopher Wenzl for Germany and Tanja Frank Eler for Slovenia. The two appointments are for a non-renewable term of six years.

Wenzl will take office on 1 November 2026. His appointment follows the move of Andrés Ritter, the current German European Prosecutor, to the post of European Chief Prosecutor in March 2026, effective from 1 November 2026.

Frank Eler is due to take office in the coming days, once the Council decision on her appointment is published in the EU Official Journal. The Slovenian appointment is part of a partial renewal of the EPPO College after seven European prosecutors' mandates expired in July 2026.

Four other new prosecutors for Belgium, France, the Czech Republic and Malta were appointed earlier this year. The EPPO said that by the end of 2025 it had 3,602 active investigations and estimated total damages of more than EUR 67.27 billion.

The office investigates and prosecutes crimes against the financial interests of the Union, including fraud, corruption and cross-border VAT fraud above EUR 10 million.
