UAE says FlyDubai copilot tried to seize control of flight to Tel Aviv
The United Arab Emirates says it is investigating a serious incident on a FlyDubai passenger flight that was heading from Dubai to Tel Aviv. According to officials, the copilot allegedly attacked the captain with an emergency axe and tried to take control of the aircraft. The plane was carrying more than 170 passengers and crew when the incident took place on Wednesday.

Officials said passengers and crew managed to restrain the copilot before the situation escalated further. A reserve pilot who was on board then took control and landed the aircraft at Tabuk airport in north-west Saudi Arabia, where the copilot was detained. The UAE prosecutor-general, Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, said the episode was being treated as a suspected terrorist act.
The authorities have not yet confirmed the suspect's identity publicly. The case has drawn attention because it involved an international commercial flight and a reported attempt to seize control of the cockpit. Aviation security incidents of this kind are rare, and the use of an emergency axe has raised questions about how the confrontation unfolded inside the aircraft.
The investigation is still trying to establish the motive, whether anyone else was involved, and what physical and digital evidence may show. The flight was travelling between two countries that have had sensitive political and security ties in recent years, which has added to the scrutiny around the case. The fact that the aircraft landed safely in Saudi Arabia limited the immediate risk to those on board, but the incident has still prompted concern over passenger safety and cockpit security.

It also comes at a time when regional tensions remain a factor in how such events are interpreted. The UAE has said the inquiry is continuing, and the airline has also said the circumstances remain under investigation. Separately, Donald Trump said he believed Iran was responsible for the attack, although that claim has not been confirmed by investigators.
No public conclusion has been announced on motive, and officials have not said whether the incident was linked to any wider network or plan. What remains unclear is how the copilot obtained the emergency axe, what triggered the confrontation, and whether the attack was planned in advance. Investigators are expected to continue examining evidence and witness accounts before reaching any formal conclusion.
For now, the case remains an open security investigation involving authorities in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
