Russian missile and drone strikes hit Kharkiv and Lviv region, killing three civilians
Rescue workers in Kharkiv recovered three bodies from the rubble of a four-storey residential building after an overnight Russian strike collapsed part of the block in the city's western Kholodnohirskyi district. The attack also damaged a five-storey building in the Shevchenkivskyi district, where windows were blown out in nearby apartment blocks. In the western Lviv region, a separate drone attack set two homes on fire in Murovane and damaged three cars.

Emergency crews, police, bomb-disposal teams and search dogs remained at the Kharkiv sites as they continued looking for anyone who might still be trapped. A responder from the State Emergency Service was injured during the operation, according to the supplied report. In Murovane, no injuries were reported after the drone strike.
The attack wave came after Russia launched five ballistic missiles, nine Banderol loitering munitions and 108 drones from the evening of 12 October, Ukraine's air force said. The air force said air defences shot down or electronically suppressed 88 drones, but strikes were still recorded at 17 locations and debris fell at seven others. The figures indicate a wide attack pattern that stretched from eastern to western Ukraine, with civilian housing among the affected targets.
The damage in Kharkiv and the Lviv region also shows how overnight strikes continue to place pressure on emergency services across multiple regions at once. Kharkiv has been a frequent target in the war because of its proximity to the front line and its role as one of Ukraine's largest cities. Residential buildings, transport links and other civilian infrastructure have repeatedly been hit during Russian missile and drone attacks since the full-scale invasion began.

The latest strike adds to that pattern and underlines the continuing risk to civilians even in areas far from active ground fighting. The incident also highlights the scale of Ukraine's air defence challenge during massed attacks involving both missiles and drones. Even when many incoming weapons are intercepted, the remaining strikes can still cause deaths, fires and structural collapse.
The use of loitering munitions alongside ballistic missiles suggests a coordinated effort to overwhelm defences and spread damage across several locations. What remains unclear is whether the Kharkiv rescue operation will uncover any further victims and how extensive the damage will prove to be once the sites are fully assessed. It is also not yet clear what military or strategic targets, if any, were intended in the affected areas.
The next developments to watch are the final casualty count, the condition of the injured responder and any further official assessment of the strike pattern across Ukraine.
