Houthi missile lands inside Aden airport perimeter amid renewed Yemen violence

A Houthi missile landed inside the perimeter of Aden airport on Wednesday, after the group issued a warning telling people to evacuate the area. The airport is in government-held Aden, one of the main centres of authority opposed to the Houthis in Yemen. Local residents reported hearing explosions in the city before the warning was issued.

A local police source said the strike happened while a Saudi military aircraft was at the airport, but the plane was not hit and took off shortly afterwards. The same source spoke on condition of anonymity because of security concerns. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said in a post on Telegram that the group was warning those present to leave because of the presence of what he described as a Saudi military cargo plane carrying weapons.

The airport incident came as separate strikes blamed on Saudi Arabia killed 14 people in Houthi-held Jawf province, according to Houthi broadcaster Almasirah. The broadcaster said 10 others were wounded, including women and children, in attacks that hit a market and a petrol station in the north-west of the province. There was no immediate comment from Saudi authorities on either set of strikes.

The attacks underline the renewed intensity of Yemen's conflict since the war reignited this summer. The Houthis have repeatedly targeted Aden in recent weeks, while also stepping up attacks on Saudi-linked targets. The airport has become a recurring flashpoint because of its military and political significance, as well as its proximity to the front line between Houthi-held territory and areas controlled by the internationally recognised government.

The latest strike also fits into a wider pattern of escalation that has included previous missile attacks on the airport perimeter and on other government sites in Aden. According to the same police source, the Houthis targeted a Saudi coalition military position near the airport on Saturday, and the airport was also hit the previous week. Earlier this month, two missiles landed within the airport perimeter a day after a deadly missile attack struck the presidential palace in Aden.

The broader conflict has been shaped by shifting regional alignments and repeated attacks on airspace, ports and military positions. The Houthis have also reported frequent Saudi airstrikes, while the group has declared a maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia and attacked its ships, territory and oil facilities. What remains unclear is whether the latest airport strike caused any damage beyond the perimeter, and whether the separate strikes in Jawf province will trigger further retaliation.

The next developments to watch are any official response from Saudi Arabia, any casualty updates from Jawf, and whether Aden airport remains operational after the attack.
