EU adopts fourth EPF assistance measure for Mauritania worth EUR 20 million

The Council has adopted a fourth assistance measure under the European Peace Facility in support of Mauritania, with a value of EUR 20 million. The decision provides the Mauritanian armed forces with military equipment and follows three previously adopted assistance measures.

According to the Council, the measures are meant to support the Mauritanian armed forces in promoting stability in the Sahel, countering the risk of destabilisation, and protecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Mauritania and its civilian population. The EU's overall bilateral support for Mauritania under the EPF now stands at EUR 75 million.

The EU is already providing the Mauritanian armed forces with capabilities for military activities on land and at sea, including surveillance, deterrence and operations. The newly adopted measure will add non-lethal land surveillance assets, complementing equipment planned under an assistance measure adopted in 2025.

The equipment is intended to strengthen situational awareness across national territory. The EPF, established in March 2021, is the EU instrument for financing external actions with military or defence implications and for strengthening third-state capacities in military and defence matters.
