Venezuela military bombardment against ELN in Apure border area leaves several dead, NGO says

A military bombardment against the National Liberation Army, known as the ELN, has left several people dead near Venezuela's border with Colombia, according to a human rights group. The incident was reported in rural Apure state in the south-west of Venezuela, an area long affected by armed-group activity. Video seen by reporters showed bodies on the ground, fallen trees and the ruins of what appeared to be a camp.

The NGO Fundaredes said one of its coordinators saw the first nine dead after the attack. Its director, Javier Tarazona, said this was the first Venezuelan bombardment against the ELN. The group also called for a transparent investigation, identification of the dead and protection for civilians in the region.

An activist for human rights also spoke about the incident to the news agency that received the account. The ELN is one of the oldest armed groups in Latin America and remains active along the Venezuela-Colombia border. Fundaredes said it has documented the presence and activity of irregular armed groups in the Venezuelan frontier for years, along with threats, territorial control and the vulnerability of local communities.

The organisation's statement underlines the continuing risk faced by civilians in border areas where state forces, insurgent groups and criminal networks can overlap. The reported strike is significant because it suggests a more direct military response by Venezuela in a border zone where armed groups have long operated. Apure has repeatedly been described as a sensitive area because of its proximity to Colombia and the movement of armed actors across the frontier.

Any confirmed escalation there could affect security conditions for residents and complicate relations around border control and insurgent activity. The ELN was founded in 1964 and was inspired by the Cuban revolution and liberation theology. It became the most powerful active guerrilla group on the continent after most of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia disarmed in 2016.

That wider regional context helps explain why any confrontation involving the ELN draws attention beyond the immediate border area, especially when civilian casualties are reported. What remains unclear is the full death toll, the identities of those killed and whether the Venezuelan authorities will confirm the operation or provide details. It is also not yet clear what prompted the bombardment or whether there were further clashes in the area.

The main issues to watch are any official investigation, confirmation of the victims and whether the incident leads to a broader security response along the border.
