Russia says massive drone attack damaged industrial site in Nizhny Novgorod region amid refinery strike reports

Russian authorities said an overnight drone attack targeted an industrial enterprise in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, with regional officials reporting significant damage in the Kstovsky district. Separate reports suggested that the Kstovo oil refinery may also have been hit in the same attack. The incident is the latest in a series of strikes on Russian energy and industrial infrastructure.

Regional governor Gleb Nikitin said on Telegram that the attack was "massive" and that more than 100 drones had been destroyed. He said early information indicated there were no casualties, while emergency crews were working at the scene. Nikitin also warned that restoration work could lead to temporary power cuts, along with reduced hot water and heating supplies in some residential utility networks.

The refinery named in the reports is the Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez site in Kstovo, which is described as one of Russia's largest such facilities. According to the company, the plant produces diesel and aviation fuel, among other products. If confirmed, damage there would add to pressure on a sector that has become a repeated target in the wider conflict.

The attack matters because Russian refineries and related fuel infrastructure are central to both domestic supply and the country's war economy. Strikes on these sites can disrupt fuel processing, create local utility problems and force emergency repairs, even when casualties are not reported. They also carry potential implications for energy markets, given the role of Russian diesel and aviation fuel in supply chains.

The reported strike comes after a fire at another refinery in Russia's Samara region earlier this week, which was also linked to a drone attack. Ukrainian forces have increasingly targeted Russian energy infrastructure this year, including refineries, terminals and depots, in an effort to hit a key economic sector. At the same time, Russian strikes on Ukraine have continued to damage power systems, underscoring the reciprocal nature of the campaign.

What remains unclear is the full extent of the damage in Kstovo and whether the refinery itself was directly hit. Officials have not yet provided a detailed assessment of the industrial site or the duration of any utility disruptions. Further confirmation is likely to depend on additional statements from regional authorities and any follow-up reporting from the scene.
