Spanish police arrest three in Seville province over suspected war weapons trafficking

Spanish police have arrested three people in Seville province over their alleged involvement in trafficking military-grade weapons. Officers seized an AK-47 assault rifle and an M80 anti-tank rocket launcher during the operation, both described as working order. Investigators said the weapons were allegedly intended for criminal groups linked to drug trafficking.

According to the official account, the investigation began last June after officers identified a possible network involved in marketing this type of weaponry. The inquiry led police to several people based in Dos Hermanas, who were allegedly acting as intermediaries between suppliers and potential buyers. One of the main suspects was said to have arranged contacts between the different sides of the network.

Police said the two weapons were found after officers spotted two suspects travelling in a vehicle during a surveillance operation. When they noticed police, both allegedly tried to flee and threw a bag onto the road. Inside it, officers found a 7.62-millimetre AK-47 and a 64-millimetre M80 anti-tank rocket launcher.

A third arrest was later made in connection with the brokering of the weapons. The operation included four house searches, three in Dos Hermanas and one in Seville. The three detainees were brought before the Investigating Court acting as Duty Court in Dos Hermanas.

Police also said the illegal market price of assault rifles could reach €6,000 per unit, underlining the value of such weapons to organised crime groups. The case points to the continuing challenge of preventing military-grade arms from entering criminal supply chains. The investigation is significant because it links war weapons to criminal organisations already associated with drug trafficking, a pattern that can increase the firepower available to organised crime.

Seville province has long been a strategic area for law-enforcement efforts against trafficking networks because of its role in wider criminal logistics. In this case, investigators have not said where the weapons came from or how far the network extended beyond the suspects identified in Dos Hermanas. What remains unclear is whether further arrests are expected or whether additional weapons were recovered beyond the two seized during the operation.

The court process in Dos Hermanas will determine the next legal steps for the three detainees. Police have not released further details on the suspected buyers or the full scale of the network, and the investigation may continue as officers examine the material gathered in the searches.
