Houthi missile intercepted near Medina as Saudi warning issued around Yanbu

Saudi Arabia said its air defences intercepted a ballistic missile launched toward the Medina region on Thursday, in the latest cross-border attack attributed to Yemen's Houthi movement. The announcement came shortly after civil defence authorities issued a warning about potential danger near Yanbu, on the Red Sea coast. Officials did not say whether the two alerts were directly connected.

Saudi coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said in a post on X that air defence had "intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the terrorist Houthi militia toward the Medina region." The warning in Yanbu was issued by the National Early Warning Platform, which said there was a potential danger in Yanbu Governorate. The report did not give details on any damage or casualties from either incident. Medina is one of Islam's holiest cities, and any threat in its direction carries particular sensitivity in the kingdom.

The Houthis have repeatedly said they do not target the holy cities of Mecca or Medina, but they have continued to launch missiles and drones at Saudi targets during their wider campaign against the kingdom. Those attacks have previously focused on airports, energy infrastructure and military sites. Yanbu also has strategic importance for Saudi Arabia because it is the terminus of the East-West Pipeline, which allows Saudi oil to bypass the Strait of Hormuz.

The port has been mentioned repeatedly in recent months as a target area, underlining the vulnerability of infrastructure linked to the kingdom's energy exports. The warning therefore adds to concerns about the security of key coastal facilities as regional tensions continue. The incident comes against the backdrop of the long-running conflict between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition, which has seen repeated missile and drone attacks across the border.

Saudi authorities have often responded by announcing interceptions rather than reporting direct impacts, but the frequency of such incidents has kept border security and critical infrastructure protection high on the agenda. The latest episode also highlights how the conflict can affect both religiously significant locations and economically important transport routes. What remains unclear is whether the missile threat near Medina and the warning in Yanbu were part of the same operation or separate events.

There was no immediate confirmation of damage, injuries or further launches. The next developments to watch are whether Saudi authorities provide more detail on the interception and whether the Houthis comment on the reported attack.
