Guatemalan opposition lawmaker and three police officers killed in armed attack in Zacapa
A Guatemalan opposition lawmaker and three National Civil Police officers have been killed in an armed attack in the eastern department of Zacapa. The attack took place in Rio Hondo on Friday and has drawn a response from the country's president and security authorities. Officials said the lawmaker, Julio Portillo, died later in hospital from gunshot wounds.

The Ministry of Government said the three other victims were police officers who were responding to what it described as a direct attack on the deputy. Authorities said the assailants were unidentified and have not publicly given a motive. The president, Bernardo Arevalo, condemned the attack on Saturday and ordered security forces to work with the Public Ministry to clarify the facts and identify those responsible.
Portillo was 35 and belonged to the opposition party Cabal, which opposes Arevalo's Movimiento Semilla. The attack happened in a region described by authorities and local reporting as having a strong narcotics presence and control by the Lorenzana family cartel, which is linked to Mexico's Sinaloa cartel. Officials also said that more than a month earlier, clashes between drug traffickers in the same area left eight people dead.
The killings highlight the continuing security challenge posed by organised crime in parts of eastern Guatemala. Zacapa has been repeatedly associated with drug trafficking routes and armed groups, making any violent incident there politically sensitive as well as a public safety issue. The death of an elected opposition figure adds a further layer of concern for a country where criminal violence and political tensions can overlap.

The case also places pressure on the government to show progress in investigations and protection of public officials. The Public Ministry has been asked to help establish who carried out the attack and why. So far, there has been no official identification of the perpetrators and no confirmed explanation for the assault.
What remains unclear is whether Portillo was the intended target and whether the police officers were killed during an exchange of fire or in a separate phase of the attack. Authorities have not released further details on arrests or possible suspects. The next developments are likely to depend on forensic work, witness accounts and any statement from prosecutors or police investigators.
