FAO forecasts 126.5 million tonnes of cereal output in LIFDCs in 2026

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations forecasts aggregate cereal production among Low-Income Food-Deficit Countries at approximately 126.5 million tonnes in 2026. The estimate, published in the November 2026 edition of its triannual Crop Prospects and Food Situation report, is about 2% above both the 2025 level and the five-year average.

FAO said the increase mainly reflects an expected strong production recovery in Asia, particularly in Near East Asia. Production among African LIFDCs is expected to remain near average, according to the report released in Rome on 8 November 2026.

The report says the number of countries and territories estimated to require external assistance for food remains unchanged at 41, with 31 in Africa. It identifies persisting conflicts and insecurity as the main drivers of the most severe acute food insecurity, while weather shocks linked to the strong El Niño event are worsening conditions in several subregions.

FAO said El Niño-related impacts on production are expected to remain severe into 2027 in several subregions, likely aggravating acute food insecurity further.
