Social media footage shows extensive flooding in local areas, including a submerged Woolworths car park at Umina.
NSW State Emergency Service Superintendent Matt Kirby emphasized the ongoing nature of the emergency, stating, “Much of our efforts will be focused on clearing fallen trees and repairing damaged roofs.” He also cautioned against driving through floodwaters and advised residents to be mindful of parking near trees, which remain at risk of falling.
This severe weather event comes just a week after Sydney experienced unseasonably warm temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, leading to crowded beaches. However, as the weather deteriorated, authorities have closed many popular swimming spots, including Coogee, Bronte, Tamarama, and Maroubra. Bondi Beach, while still open, has seen dangerous conditions prompting additional surveillance from lifeguards.
