Leading defence scientists emphasize the innovative ways in which Ukrainian forces are altering hand grenades and other devices for effective use in combat situations.

Cai, a prominent defence analyst, highlighted that the drones utilized during the Ukraine war primarily serve two purposes: as suicide devices and for reconnaissance and strike operations. The Ukrainian military has achieved remarkable results by equipping their drones with an array of small-calibre aerial bombs, which include NATO-standard munitions alongside improvised yet practical modifications.

This evolution in warfare tactics not only illustrates the adaptability of the Ukrainian forces but may also provide valuable lessons for the Chinese military. Observers suggest that Chinese strategy could take cues from these battlefield innovations, potentially leading to new developments in their own drone technology.

In a separate development that showcases the commercial potential of drone technology, Shanghai is set to implement regulations allowing consumer drones to operate in designated "free-to-fly" zones. Starting February 1, 2024, 46% of the city will be opened up for registered drones categorized as micro, light, and small UAVs, with the aim of bolstering the local low-altitude economy.

These emerging regulations could signify an important shift in how urban airspace is utilized, indicating that both military and civilian applications of drone technology are on the rise in China.
