The Department of Justice Approves Historic Number of Settlements to Camp Lejeune Victims and Families

The U.S. Department of Justice announced the approval of 649 settlement offers amounting to $175 million in just the past three weeks, compensating victims exposed to toxic water at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. These payments are part of the wider implementation of the Camp Lejeune Justice Act, enacted under the Honoring our PACT Act of 2022. Since January 20, 2025, over $421 million has been distributed to affected individuals, with a cumulative total of more than $700 million in settlements approved since the program's inception in 2023.

The contaminated water exposure at Camp Lejeune occurred between 1953 and 1987, impacting military personnel and their families stationed there. During this period, drinking water systems were tainted, resulting in increased risks of cancers and other diseases among those exposed. The Department’s recent push to accelerate settlement approvals reflects an effort to deliver long-overdue compensation to thousands of victims.

The settlements directly affect more than 2,500 claimants so far, providing financial relief to veterans, active-duty service members, and family members who suffered serious health conditions linked to toxic exposure. The initiative reiterates the U.S. government’s commitment to recognizing and addressing the service-related harms caused by the water contamination.

This surge in settlement approvals marks a milestone in a historic compensation program, signaling progress in governmental accountability and reaffirming support for military communities harmed by environmental negligence. Continued approvals are expected weekly as the settlement program advances.
