UN Security Council Condemns Iranian Attacks on Gulf States and Jordan in Unanimous Vote

The United Nations Security Council has overwhelmingly condemned recent attacks by Iran targeting Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and Jordan. Resolution 2817 passed with 13 votes in favor, while China and Russia abstained, signaling widespread international repudiation of Iran’s use of force. The resolution was tabled by Bahrain on behalf of GCC countries and Jordan, reflecting a concerted diplomatic push at the UN.

Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, praised the resolution as a reflection of global consensus rejecting Iran’s unprovoked aggression. The move followed intense lobbying efforts by Gulf states amidst escalating regional hostilities. GCC nations and Jordan are directly impacted, facing security threats that have destabilized an already volatile region.

The Security Council’s condemnation comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Iran’s regional policies and proxy engagements. The resolution elevates the international community’s call for restraint and respect for sovereignty in the Middle East, potentially influencing future diplomatic and security measures.

This development also highlights divisions with Russia and China, who opted not to support the resolution, underscoring the complex geopolitics influencing the Security Council’s handling of Middle Eastern conflicts. Nevertheless, the broad majority vote sends a strong message of solidarity with the Gulf states and Jordan.
