UK and 23 Countries Urge Georgia to Halt Democratic Backsliding, Follow OSCE Reforms

A coalition of 24 countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and Ukraine, issued a joint statement demanding that Georgia reverse recent democratic setbacks. This follows the release of a detailed OSCE Moscow Mechanism report that assessed political conditions in Georgia and identified a worrying trend of democratic erosion.
The international group emphasized the need for Georgia to fully adopt the recommendations set forth in the 2026 OSCE report. The countries underscore that democratic backsliding jeopardizes the stability and international commitments of Georgia, potentially undermining its integration with European institutions.
The statement recognizes the rigorous work of Professor Patrycja Grzebyk, who authored the report, providing an independent and comprehensive review of Georgia’s political landscape. The urgency of these reforms is heightened amid regional tensions and geopolitical risks impacting the South Caucasus.
Should Georgia fail to implement the suggestions, it risks diplomatic isolation and weakening of international support. The call from this broad coalition highlights growing concern in Western and regional capitals over Georgia’s political direction and its broader implications for democratic norms in the area.
