Four UK Taxi Drivers Jailed for Smuggling Migrants to France in Lorry Scheme

Four UK-based taxi drivers were convicted and sentenced for participating in a migrant smuggling ring that transported illegal migrants from the UK to France concealed in lorries. At the center of the operation was Madjid Belabes, who earned around £290,000 by charging migrants £1,200 each for passage to mainland Europe. The scheme was active from late 2022 to late 2023, with Belabes orchestrating at least 26 separate runs.
The migrants—mainly from Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco—entered the UK legally on tourist visas, using Britain as a transit point to reach France illegally. In one notable incident, French officials discovered 58 migrants hidden in lorries arranged by the gang. The operation highlights the risks and complexities surrounding migration routes through Europe and the exploitation of legal visa systems.
Authorities say this case reveals the sophisticated networks involved in migrant smuggling and the use of legitimate transport channels such as taxis and lorries to evade border controls. The convictions send a message intended to deter similar trafficking networks in the future. The migrants themselves remain vulnerable to dangerous journeys and exploitation, underscoring ongoing humanitarian and security challenges for UK and European border agencies.
