CBP Seizes Over 900 Pounds of Liquid Meth Hidden in Fuel Tank at Otay Mesa Border

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers intercepted a major drug shipment on March 2 at the Otay Mesa Cargo Facility near San Diego. They seized more than 900 pounds of liquid methamphetamine hidden ingeniously inside the fuel tank of a tractor-trailer attempting to enter the United States from Mexico. The tractor-trailer was driven by a 26-year-old Mexican national who was sent for additional inspection after initial screening raised suspicions.
During the thorough vehicle search, CBP officers used advanced non-intrusive technology and physical probing of the fuel tank, uncovering an unknown gel-like substance mixed within the diesel fuel. They subsequently extracted 29 five-gallon buckets containing the illicit liquid meth. This sizable seizure prevents a substantial quantity of narcotics from entering American communities, helping curb drug trafficking and potential public safety risks.
The event highlights ongoing challenges at the U.S.-Mexico border where large quantities of drugs are concealed using sophisticated methods to evade detection. CBP's ability to detect and seize these shipments disrupts organized criminal networks that fuel drug abuse and violence in the U.S. The arrest of the driver underscores continued enforcement actions against individuals involved in narcotics smuggling.
This bust serves as a critical reminder of the persistent threat posed by cross-border drug trafficking and the importance of border security resources dedicated to protecting public health and safety in the United States.
