UK Ministry of Defence Boosts Support for Victims of Sexual Violence in Armed Forces

The UK Ministry of Defence has announced a £500,000 investment to strengthen support for victims of sexual violence and misconduct in the Armed Forces. This funding will add five permanent posts to the Victim Witness Care Unit (VWCU), enabling it to support about 100 more cases each year. The VWCU offers independent, trauma-informed care to victims and witnesses, operating outside military command chains to ensure impartiality.

Specialist Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) teams will be established at major military centers such as Catterick Garrison and HM Naval Base Devonport to actively prevent unacceptable behaviour and sexual violence. This initiative comes amid ongoing concerns about the levels of sexual misconduct within UK military ranks.

The new roles include victim liaison officers who will provide direct support and guidance throughout investigations, aiming to improve victim experiences and encourage reporting. The expanded support system is designed to create safer environments within the Armed Forces and promote accountability.

By enhancing victim care and prevention, this move addresses longstanding issues of abuse and misconduct in the military, supporting cultural change and helping to rebuild trust within service personnel and their families.
