Ukraine Terminates 116 Agreements with Russia, Belarus, and CIS Amid Ongoing Conflict

Ukraine has officially terminated 116 agreements it previously held with Russia, Belarus, and the CIS, aiming to adjust its legal and diplomatic stance amid ongoing conflict with Russia. The Cabinet of Ministers authorized the move on Wednesday, with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirming the details and emphasizing that Ukraine needs its treaty framework to reflect wartime realities.

Among the terminated agreements, 25 were fully canceled, 3 denounced, and 88 treaties withdrawn from, with 5 involving Russia and 23 involving Belarus. This marks a significant break in formal relations with Moscow and Minsk, further distancing Ukraine from Russia-led regional frameworks during a time of heightened hostilities.

The decision underscores Kyiv’s intent to assert its sovereignty and recalibrate its international relations to better suit the security challenges posed by Russia’s invasion. It also signals to global partners Ukraine’s shift away from past commitments tied to Russian influence.

The termination of these agreements may complicate specific legal and economic interactions but prioritizes Ukraine's national security and alignment with a new European security order. The move is likely to have ramifications for diplomatic negotiations and the broader conflict dynamics in Eastern Europe.
