At least 70 killed in brutal gang attacks in Haiti’s Artibonite region, thousands displaced

A deadly spree of gang violence in Haiti’s Artibonite region has left at least 70 people dead and more than 30 injured, according to human rights organizations. The attacks by the ‘Gran Grif’ gang devastated the towns of Jean Denis and Pont Sonde, destroying over 50 homes and forcing nearly 6,000 residents to flee for their safety. Many displaced families are now living in dire conditions in nearby towns.

Haiti’s National Police, supported by Kenyan peacekeepers, launched a response after the gang used trenches and roadblocks to delay their arrival, allowing them to carry out mass killings and arson. Rights groups have sharply condemned the Haitian government, accusing it of failing to protect citizens and effectively allowing the gangs to operate with impunity.

This surge of violence highlights the worsening security crisis in Haiti, undermining government authority and exacerbating the humanitarian situation. The large-scale displacement and destruction of homes raise urgent concerns about the safety and stability of the affected communities. The lack of timely intervention by authorities risks further emboldening gangs and worsening lawlessness.

The attacks deepen Haiti’s longstanding challenges with gang violence, governance, and public safety, further destabilizing an already fragile nation. The international community and Haitian government face increased pressure to restore security and provide relief to the thousands affected.
