Richmond Police Crack Down on Illegal Stopping During Cherry Blossom Season

During the weekend of March 28-29, Richmond police stepped up traffic enforcement along Russ Baker Way near Larry Berg Flight Path Park in British Columbia to address dangerous congestion caused by illegal stopping. Cherry blossom season attracts large crowds, and many drivers were stopping despite posted no-stopping signs, creating significant road hazards.
Officers issued 32 violation tickets, gave numerous verbal warnings, and towed two unoccupied vehicles to restore traffic flow and safety. At peak times, around 50 vehicles were observed stopped illegally, compounding safety risks for both drivers and pedestrians.
The crackdown underlines challenges cities face in managing popular seasonal events that draw large visitors while ensuring public safety on busy roadways. Richmond RCMP's actions seek to balance public enjoyment of the cherry blossoms with maintaining safe traffic conditions.
Local commuters and visitors to the park are directly affected as enforcement aims to prevent accidents and maintain smooth traffic movement on this heavily used roadway during the peak tourist season.
