Canada Special Elections Result in Liberal Majority

Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal Party secured a majority in the House of Commons following special elections held on April 13, 2026.
The elections filled three vacant parliamentary seats, two in Toronto and one in Quebec.
The Liberals won the two Toronto-area ridings, University-Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest, while the Quebec riding of Terrebonne remained undecided but showed a slight Liberal lead.
These victories bring the Liberal Party to 173 seats in the 343-seat House of Commons, surpassing the threshold for a majority government.
This ends a year of minority government under Carney's leadership.
The majority allows Carney's government to pass legislation without relying on opposition parties, providing greater control over the political agenda.
This strengthened position follows five defections from opposition parties, including four from the Conservative Party, which contributed to the Liberals reaching majority status.
The Toronto vacancies arose after former Liberal Defence Minister Bill Blair was appointed ambassador to the UK and former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland took an advisory role in Ukraine.
The majority is expected to last until the next scheduled national elections in 2029.
