Italy Suspends Defence Cooperation Deal with Israel Amid Middle East Tensions

Italy has suspended the automatic renewal of its defence cooperation agreement with Israel, marking a significant shift in relations between the two countries.

The decision was announced by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on April 14, 2026, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The defence agreement, originally approved by Israel in 2006, facilitates cooperation in military equipment exchange, technology research, training of military personnel, and information technology.

It is automatically renewed every five years, but Italy's government has now put this renewal on hold.

This move follows recent criticism by the Italian government of Israeli military actions in Lebanon, which have resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries.

The suspension reflects growing diplomatic strain between Italy and Israel.

Tensions further escalated after an incident in Lebanon where Israeli forces reportedly fired warning shots at a convoy of Italian peacekeepers, damaging at least one vehicle but causing no injuries.

Italy summoned the Israeli ambassador to protest the incident.

In response, Israel summoned the Italian ambassador following critical remarks by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

Tajani condemned what he described as "unacceptable attacks" on Lebanese civilians by Israeli forces during a visit to Beirut, where he met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi.

Italy's right-wing government, led by Meloni, has historically been one of Israel's closest allies in Europe.

However, the recent developments indicate a cooling of this relationship amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
