Trump warns UK trade deal 'can always be changed' amid strained relations

US President Donald Trump has indicated that the existing trade deal between the United States and the United Kingdom "can always be changed." Speaking to Sky News on April 15, 2026, Trump described the trade agreement, which was signed in May last year, as favorable to the UK but suggested it remains subject to renegotiation.

Trump criticized UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for his government's stance on the ongoing US-Israel conflict, highlighting that the UK did not support the US in the war against Iran.

He stated that the "special relationship" between the two countries "had been better" and expressed disappointment over the UK's lack of support when requested.

Despite these tensions, Trump emphasized that the strained diplomatic relations would not overshadow the upcoming state visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla to the United States later in April.

He spoke positively about King Charles, noting a long-standing acquaintance and describing him as "wonderful." The trade deal, which reduced tariffs on imports such as cars, aluminium, and steel, marked a significant economic agreement between the two nations.

However, recent political disagreements, particularly over Middle East policy, have introduced strains into the traditionally close alliance.

Trump also criticized Starmer's domestic policies, labeling the UK's immigration and energy policies as "insane," though he maintained a personal liking for the Prime Minister.

The comments reflect a notable shift in tone from previous US-UK interactions under Trump's administration.

The situation remains fluid as the UK prepares for the royal visit to the US, with diplomatic efforts likely to focus on managing the current tensions.
