Deadly Israeli Strikes in Lebanon Amid US-Mediated Diplomatic Talks

Israel launched a series of deadly airstrikes across southern Lebanon on April 15, killing at least 13 people despite ongoing diplomatic efforts between Lebanon and Israel in Washington.

The attacks targeted multiple towns including Jbaa, Ansariyeh, and Qadmus, with strikes also reported south of Beirut in Saadiyat and Jiyeh.

Lebanon's state-run National News Agency confirmed the fatalities, reporting that a family home in Jbaa was hit, resulting in the deaths of four family members.

Additional casualties were reported in Ansariyeh and Qadmus.

The Israeli military stated it struck over 200 Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon within the past 24 hours.

The strikes occurred just one day after a historic meeting between Lebanese and Israeli envoys in the United States, hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

This was the first direct contact between the two countries in decades.

Both sides described the talks as positive, although Israel ruled out discussions on Lebanon's demand for a ceasefire.

The timing of the attacks amid diplomatic engagement highlights the fragile and volatile nature of the conflict, which has seen a fragile ceasefire since November 2024 repeatedly violated.

The conflict escalated in March 2026 when Hezbollah launched attacks in retaliation for the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader.

Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah condemned the Lebanese government's decision to engage in talks with Israel, calling it a "national sin" that deepens internal divisions.

He warned that negotiating with Israel, described as "the enemy," was the wrong path and accused the government of squandering Lebanon's interests.
