US House extends Temporary Protected Status for Haitians, defying Trump

The United States House of Representatives voted on April 16 to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nearly 350,000 Haitians living in the country.

The measure passed with bipartisan support, including ten Republicans joining Democrats, by a margin of 224 to 204.

This extension would allow Haitians currently under TPS to maintain their status for an additional three years.

TPS is a program designed to protect foreign nationals from deportation when their home countries face unsafe conditions such as violence or natural disasters.

It also grants temporary work authorization to eligible individuals.

The extension comes amid ongoing violence and political instability in Haiti.

The bill's passage in the House represents a significant rebuke to President Donald Trump, who has opposed extending TPS for Haitians.

The White House has indicated it would likely veto the legislation if it reaches the president's desk.

Despite this, the vote reflects growing bipartisan resistance to the administration's efforts to restrict immigration.

Democratic Representative Ayanna Pressley, co-chair of the House Haiti Caucus, described the vote as a "monumental victory" and emphasized the importance of protecting the safety and dignity of Haitian residents in the US.

The bill advanced through a bipartisan discharge petition, bypassing Republican leadership in the House.

The Trump administration has previously sought to end TPS for Haitians, citing national interests and asserting that prior extensions exceeded executive authority.
