77-year-old man fined for assaulting traffic warden in Welshpool

A 77-year-old man was fined after assaulting and threatening a female traffic warden in Welshpool, Powys.

The incident occurred at the Seven Stars car park in November 2025 and was captured on body-worn camera footage.

Stephen Doughty became agitated when a pay-and-display machine rejected his coins, leading to a confrontation with traffic warden Wendy Williams.

Court footage showed Doughty repeatedly slapping Williams' hand and verbally abusing her.

Doughty admitted to assault by beating and was fined £500.

He was also ordered to pay £200 in compensation to Williams.

The court heard that the attack happened after Williams checked her handheld device and found Doughty had not purchased a £2.50 ticket.

The case highlights tensions that can arise during routine parking enforcement, especially when technical issues with payment machines occur.

It also underscores the challenges faced by traffic wardens in carrying out their duties.
