Falklands Veteran Hopes King Charles III Can Influence US on Sovereignty Row

Falklands War veteran Simon Weston has expressed hope that King Charles III can persuade US President Donald Trump to "back down" amid ongoing tensions over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.

This comes as reports suggest the US may review its position on the UK's claim to the territory.

Weston criticized Trump's recent comments on the issue, describing them as a "hissy fit" that undermines the sacrifices made during the 1982 conflict.

An internal Pentagon email, reported by Reuters, hinted at possible US policy changes, including options to punish NATO allies perceived as unsupportive of US actions in Iran.

The UK government maintains that sovereignty over the Falkland Islands rests with the UK and emphasizes the islanders' right to self-determination.

Meanwhile, Argentina continues to assert its claim and has expressed willingness to resume negotiations.

The US State Department has reiterated its position of neutrality, acknowledging the conflicting sovereignty claims but recognizing the UK's de facto administration of the islands without taking a side.

Weston, who was severely injured during the Falklands War, called on King Charles III to use his upcoming state visit to the US to encourage President Trump to "calm down" and show respect to the Falkland Islanders and veterans.

The sovereignty dispute remains a sensitive and politically charged issue, with Argentina's President Javier Milei, an ally of Trump, publicly reaffirming Argentina's claim to the islands.
