Manhunt for 89-year-old gunman after Athens shooting spree

Authorities in Athens have launched a manhunt for an 89-year-old suspect following a shooting spree that injured five people.

The incident began at a social security agency in the Petralona district, where the attacker wounded an employee in the leg.

The suspect then took a taxi to a courthouse in Ampelokipi, where four additional people were injured before he fled the scene, leaving behind a shotgun.

Police confirmed that the gunman concealed the weapon under his coat upon entering the buildings.

All five victims, comprising one man and four women, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The motive behind the shootings remains unclear, although the suspect reportedly threw envelopes on the courthouse floor, which he claimed contained explanations for his actions.

Gun violence is relatively rare in Greece, where firearm ownership is permitted but strictly regulated.

The attack caused disruption, including a temporary suspension of arrivals and departures by air traffic controllers due to radio communication faults.

The state broadcaster reported the ongoing search for the suspect, who remains at large.
